WILL SHOPPING MALLS
BECOME
THE NEXT DINSOSAURS?
Shopping malls have been undergoing significant change since the late 1990’s, and the pace of change seems only to be accelerating. Many second and third tier malls are being repurposed or simply torn down to be replaced by higher uses. Even top tier malls are experiencing high vacancy rates never seen before by their owners. What choices do tenants have, if they still want to have a significant physical presence across America? And how can they afford it?
Join us for an informative conversation with Yaromir Steiner, the founder and CEO of Columbus, Ohio-based Steiner+Associates. Steiner is one of the true thought leaders on the future of shopping centers in the U.S.
In the last half century, Steiner and his teams have developed more than 7 million square feet of mixed-use real estate including the groundbreaking Cocowalk in Miami, FL and the open-air Easton Town Center in Columbus, OH. Steiner’s projects represent some of the most iconic, innovative and influential retail and mixed-use environments in the U.S. and have significantly impacted the urban, social and economic landscapes of their respective communities.
Among other issues, Steiner will discuss the following:
-
How did the U.S. get so overstored in the first place?
-
Are Covid and Amazon largely responsible for forcing the closure of so many stores, or are there other forces at play?
-
Have shopping center tenants been the victims of their own failed strategies?
-
What will the next generation of shopping environments look like and why?
-
The 2nd and 3rd tier shopping centers need to be repurposed, redeveloped or torn down. Where will the capital come from to carry out this gigantic task?
